Examples were found on french ww1 trench area (East of France).
I also saw examples in a ww1 Belgian museum.
An expertise was made by our Eod service and the projectile was filled with "cheddite" cartridges.
Seems to be an early improvised projectile for trench mortar (like a big petard grenade). 2 sizes found.
I'm quite sure it's not a grenade, two heavy and the "handle" is too big and not ergonomic.
The body is surrounded by a metal structure. A hole on the side received a safety fuse.
No reference in french doc (lot of threads for ID on french forums...). Maybe one day we will find a ww1 photo with these projos, the best clue.

The only approx similar ammunition I have seen in a doc is this one.

Old book (1886) and approx same dimensions. A possible track to follow

So French made but unknown designation and unknown launcher (maybe improvised projectile used with first 58T N°1 launcher).

Good find! It proofes my theory for not beeing german because I have seen several of them with 100% same construction on the italian WW1 front lines. And the italians also used the 58T mortar with french and italian made shells. So they still can be §improvised factory made" and also delivered to Italy.

Now someone with such a shell should meassure the diameter of the wooden end (although the meassured value won't be very accurate it will be one more track).

Diameter of the wood stick is approximately 55mm.

I think it would fit well if we take the age of the wood into calculation.

Hello,
measured ours in the collection - both are 57,5mm in diameter.

I've had one of the large ones now for about a year and could not come even close to identifying it - thank you for the link in the Nice Pictures thread to the bleuhorizon canalblog web site!

Most items are fairly easy to value but with this being given to me and, I suspect, the rarity of it I am having a very hard time placing a value on it.
Mine is NOT for sale, but would anyone know an approximate value for one so I can properly list it in my inventory.
