Cutaway model of the “7,5cm SprGr. Patr (h)” high explosive shell for the Dutch 7,5cm Vickers TL Nr.1 gun (TL =Tegen Luchtdoelen /Anti Aircraft). In 1935 the Dutch government bought 72 pcs 7.5cm Vickers guns. In those days they were very modern guns with a seperate fire control and predictor unit that could steer several guns. They formed the backbone of the Dutch AAA.
In 1940, they were taken over as spoils of war by the German AAA units as the 7,5cm Vickers M.35 (h), and German cartridges were produced to be used in the captured Dutch guns. The cartridge described here is a german manufactured cartridge.

The projectile is made of mild steel and it has a copper drivingbelt. The projectile charge exists of cast TNT with Dutch projectiles , German projectiles were filled with Sprengstoff Nr 13, a mixture of 60/40 Amatol
The projectile is fuzed with the ZtZ. Nr.5 (Tavaro), a Swiss design time fuze that was also used on the Dutch projectiles. The Zt.Z. Nr.5 is a mechanical time fuze. It can be set to a maximum of 40 seconds. The time is set by rotating the nosecap. This will shorten or lengthen the path – equals time- of the gear train that releases a radial lever that is set free by the gear ring in the lower portion of the clock, releasing the firing pin mechanism. The clock is driven by a wound up clockspring.
A seperate centrifugal safety mechanism disc is placed below the clock. This prevents the firing pin from reaching the M4 firing cap – red- before firing the projectile. The central safety disc is placed in a screwed in flange that houses the firing cap. Below that, the gaine is screwed in, in which a “sprengkapsel 38” (detonator 38) is placed.
For those who are interested in the exact workings of this fuze, I have publicized the factory booklet of the fuze below.

The German made steel shellcase is the 75 x 495R copper clad “7,5cm Patr.h 36 St (h)”. The propelling charge exists of 1,64 Kg RPC 38 powdersticks, long 400 mm, 4,5 mm in diameter, with a central hole of 1,5 mm diameter, placed in a short bag. Below that a small bag is sewed, containing 20 grams of rifle powder. A rolled up lead wire is placed on top of the powder sticks and acts as a decoppering agent. Small amounts of copper of the driving belt remain in the corners of the lands and grooves of the barrel after each shot, fouling the barrel. Upon firing the lead vaporizes, and forms a hard and brittle alloy with the copper of the drivingbelt. The next shot will break the brittle alloy to pieces and push it forward out of the barrel.
The firing cap in the base of the shellcase is the firing pin activated “Zundschraube C12 Na “ (Primer C12 new model).
Early batches of Dutch cartridges were of British manufactr\ure, later batches were Dutch made and had Dutch normalized primers in the base of the shellcase. Both British and Dutch shellcases were brass made.

Max ceiling : 8000 mtr
Practical ceiling : 6000 mtr
Projectile weight : 6,5 kg
Firing rate : 25 rnds/ minute
Vo: 850 mtrs/sec

Regards, DJH
