This is about the author's 25 missions over Europe and in particular about the Schweinfurt raids. It is extremely well written and thought provoking. It was first published in 1980 and the author stated that the time gap and his maturity allowed him to assess his part in the wider context of the war, both strategic, and political. On one of the raids a German fighter fired eleven 20 mm shell into a fuel tank of his aircraft but none detonated and there was no attending fire. When the fuel tank was removed and the shells retrieved, all were found to be empty of explosive and in one was a note, in Czech, that read similar to `This is all I can do for now.' That simple act saved ten American lives.
