First published in 1954, this was written by a `Hostilities only' man who served on one of the Kelly's sister ships, the Kimberley, one of eight `K' destroyers. Still undergoing sea trials and `working up' at the start of WW2, the ship had an eventful life of less than two years before it was sunk off Crete in May 1941, along with about half the crew. The navy tried valiantly to alleviate the hardships of the British and Commonwealth ground forces on Crete and paid a heavy price. The spirit of the crew shines through. The author told his story from the fragments that he learned from some of the survivors. I believe the custom still exists, from hundreds of years ago, that a dead shipmates effects are auctioned when back in port, and the money is passed to the dead man's family.
