    Sad news - Richard Burdett

It is with deep regret that I have to be the bearer of bad news regarding one of our fellow collectors, Richard Burdett. Many of you will know him already, a serious and knowledgable collector with a great sense of humour. Well, following a rare infection he is now paralysed from the neck down with little chance of any substantial improvement.

One of his friends locally has set up a Just Giving page to help him and Sarah through this initial difficult period. The link to the page is below. If anyone would like to contact me or send him a message please private message me rather than in the open forum, and if you feel that you can spare a few quid I know they would be extremely grateful.

    Many thanks

    Darrel

I am so sorry to hear that. But has his health deteriorated? From the website that you link till they are pretty optimistic.
8 weeks on with his determination, support from his lovely lady Sarah and great medical care, the future is looking much brighter and he is improving every day (clearly desperate to get back to pub for a glass of red), but it is going to be a long journey and he will need a lot of specialist kit to help him to become mobile once again, to rehabilitate and come home to Sarah!

    Hi Anders

I believe the comment is trying to be upbeat and optimistic. But as I said in the original post PM me with any questions as his condition should not be discussed in open forum.

    Thanks

    All,

Spotter was kind enough to contact me last week to enquire about my well-being, and I have to say I wasn’t even aware this thread existed, or even that many of you knew!
So firstly, for those that contributed to the just giving page that Sarah (my better half) setup with a friend, thank you, thank you, your contribution really does make a massive difference. I’m a quiet person so I chose not to post social media sites et cetera, but given the support many of you have provided, heres a short summary of my predicament, and progress you’ve helped enable.

In July last year I collapsed in my bedroom and within 30 mins I was paralysed from the shoulders down. As I know now, an abscess in my neck had cut off blood supply to the spinal cord causing a spinal stroke. After a 10hr operation, the prognosis wasn’t great, and that I would never move again and possibly remain on a ventilator indefinitely. I spent quite a while in neuro ICU unable to move or breath on my own. Eventually, thanks one particular physio, we got my right arm moving somewhat. Then, after a period that i can only liken to hell, i had to learn to breathe on my own, which i was able to do after 33 days. I was then was transferred to Odstock (Salisbury) for further rehab. However, where Southampton were brilliant, Odstock
were sadly the other extreme, and I discharged myself at the end of November 2020. Since then, Sarah (my other half) arranged 18-24hrs of physio and fitness per week to work on the rest of the body. After nearly 9 months of this regime, am now able to walk on two crutches and use both arms, however, my hands are not great and I still have a long way to go, with more hospital visits required.
That said, my progress to date has been incredible for a C5 tetraplegic, as very few walk. I am not working at the moment and intend to spend the next few years making the best version of me i can. When, eventually, I can get into my den, ill make sure I have time to provide more content to this great forum.

Once again, thanks for your support

    Rich

I can only wish you all the good luck there is to be found and a full recovery.
The sad thing is that we take for granted being healthy day after day and year after year, but realize only how fragile we are as terrible things like this happen.

It goes without saying Richard, that I wish you all the very best and hope for a full recovery. Regards too, to Sarah. Caring full time for someone you love with such high medical demands is a challenge. Again, all the best. Wee posts like this gladden my heart. BOCN is not just a bunch of auld farts inquiring about how Sudanese smoke mortar rounds were packaged. It's a real community, full of people with real life experiences. Thank you.
