Ernst...

Got these in last week.
8x57mm rounds made by DWM for the SS totenkopfverbände.
Pretty rare rounds. These were found in Russia, in a swamp.
To show you and possible sale or trade. Grtz, Ernst.

I am sorry but these SS stamped cartridges are not military. and had also nothing to do with them.
They were only made to mil specs, just like ammo ordered by police or customs.

If you ordered these day’s a few million rounds as a gunsmith or store, you also get also your name printed on the head stamp.

Stupid question.... so how did they get to be found in a swamp in Russia if they were not military? German tourists hunting bears?

Those are in extremely fine condition for having been found in a swamp. Shells I've had in a climate controlled shop look worse.
Here is a bit of info from the IAA:

I think these cartridges were spending some hours in a tumbler.

@pysall,Until the end of 1939 they had to buy their own gear. Sometimes surplus, sometimes new.

It changed a little by the invasion of France. Factories who worked for the army were already on the top of the production and In Feb/March 1940 the SS complained that they had too little transport facilities and no heavy arms, like artillery, PAK and MG’s and they also need more K98K rifles.
The Wehrmacht did not care, so they found a solution by organizing the “found” trucks, guns and ammunition in the CSR.

Later they get their supplies out of normal “Wehrmacht” channels.

@ Dutch...ok I think I understand what you are saying now. The cartridges were purchased by the SS through private commercial factories not associated with the Heereswaffenamt.
I presume that also explains why I have never seen a "regulation" 15 round box for these rounds. They were made for the SS but were not manufactured in a Government-run factory.

The DWM was a privat factory who made amunition for the HWA. The cartridges with a SS head stamp was a privat order.
The cartridges were delivered in 15 round boxes.
