Are pubs really closed? I am on the other side of the Pond so have no idea, but here they are open. So are strip clubs.

Did the strip clubs ever closed?
OK so the frustrated patrons had to move back to 1.5m rather than 1.5"................

Yes, all pubs, restaurants, strip clubs and shops that do not sell essential food stuff (at least 70% of their products sold must be foodstuff to be allowed to be open) are closed. Many restaurants barely survive by having meals collected at the front door either having them delivered at home, but it is strictly forbidden to offer food in the restaurant part. Even hairdressers are tracked if they do not go to peoples homes to cut hair over there, and hotels are checked if prostitutes are not offering "services" in rented rooms. Shops or bussiness caught breaking the rules get a 4000 euro ticket the first time, 10.000 euro the second time and can be closed indefinetely by administrative laws whem caught a third time. People are encouraged to betray neighbours or companies breaking the rules by phoning in anonymous to the police. Momentarely we have a cerfew starting 21.00 in the evening untill 04.30 in the morning. Getting caught outside during this period will cost you 95 euro. So far for the Netherlands.

In the UK supermarkets selling foodstuff are forced to remove stuff that is non essential foodstuff from sale (like tools, toys, clothing, electronics for instance).

Our (Ballarat) pubs closed 5 months ago and then some could serve only take-away. I now have to return to Darts at the local club with no practice.
They strictly observe the number of people in the area to avoid fines. No practice, should have retired years ago but I jag the odd surprising set.
Your cartoon was amusing. Australia is lucky? we have just re-opened the ACCA meetings next week at Goornong near Bendigo,Victoria.
I wondered how I was going to spend the surplus I had withdrawn from my superannuation. Cheers. Ron.

In the US is varies greatly by State. All of the bars that I have seen have been closed for the duration, same as as theaters, etc. They attempt to open the schools regularly, but have a threshold on the number of pending cases. Too many and they reclose and go back to online for 2 weeks.

Here in the Land of Uk the gummint is talking about allowing pubs to open - as long as they don't sell booze.

Which I suspect means that some people will get tanked up at home before venturing out for the evening.

The problem is that the government has to weigh destroying the economy versus people killed by the virus. It's the "you're damed if you do, you're damned if you dont" position they're in, and with every move, rule or law they implement they damage and upset a group of people and their interests. Add to that the "fruitcakes from funny farm" who believe in government conspiracy's , internet where every idiot can just place his "substantainted" opinion, the virus specialists who do not agree with one another and you have a recipe for disaster. Australia and New zealand have one big advantage, they're islands in the corner of the world that can easily be shut off from the rest of the world. Here we have neighbouring countries with different rules around us; some more strict, some less strict.
Over here we are now starting to open the schools again as children "cannot pass the virus"". I must say I was amazed when I heard this nonsence, because that would also mean they also cannot pass on the flu, polio and other virus diseases.
International travel is -although restricted- still allowed, so we'll be having covid around for a long time to come in my opinion, together with the destructive economic consequences it brings along.

the only thing that would absolutely help is to forbid international travel, restrict people to their own village or town, encourage working from home, and forbid people to leave their homes exept for the ultimate neccecity. That would be the fastest way to get rid of the virus. It would however mean all must cooperate, and that's not going to happen.

We have had issues with the kids as well, no one with any sense is saying that they cannot pass the virus, but the elementary schools are open more than the high schools, mostly because they in many regards serve as "babysitters" for working parents. The older children can take care of themselves while online learning (in theory). They younger ones cannot, and with all daycare shut down in many areas this leaves the working parents with no choices.

Well, you describe the whole problem in two sentences; people trying to find ways to interpret the relaxing of the covid laws their own way as soon as the law is loosened a bit, resulting in a more severe tightening of restrictions again.

Here we have the same with the cerfew; the bridge night cannot pass annymore due to the cerfew? No problem, we make it the bridge afternoon, or you all stay here to sleep over....... It's not helping the reduction of the virus and the ER's in the hospitals to empty.

Believe me, I'm not happy too with the current situation and all the living restriction resulting from covid, but the sooner we deal with it in an effective way, the sooner we will regain our freedom.

In the UK, they are talking about early April for the re-opening of our pubs?

I very much doubt it, I'm sure a new variant/strain will keep us under basic house arrest for the foreseeable future.

Sad but true.

Over here still a cerfew from 21.00 to 04.30 and I've allready made a bet with one of my friends that it 'll still be there by the end of June. Not for prevention of covid - our youth has allready found out you go to one of your mates house with the rest of the group and no one will be alarmed if you not provoke the neighbours to call the police for loud music or drunken rumour-, but the policing costs for the nightpatrol have fallen consideably (less trafic accidents, burglary, pub fights, robbery's). We'll probably get our freedom back by the end of june in trade for.....

Just 2 days ago I heard that my local Music-Pub will be closed down permanently. Many small buisiness companies will have to close down this year. Earning your livelyhood with a small buisiness had become very difficult already before Covid19. Local Druggists, Electric appliances, bookshops a.s.o. already disappeared 20-30 years ago because of the big chains. Now its catching the last local bakeries that did not alraedy disappear in the last 30 years because of industrial "premade" industry products. Covid19 made billions for a very few individuals (At the moment there is a big huff here about 2 CDU/CSU politicans, that were caught, having taken large kickback sums for the delivery of Covid protective-masks). Here in my state there never was a curfew. But,same like in NL pubs, restaurants, cinemas , every place where people usually meet, is closed since last november. I'm retired, so I have no worries about existence. But the young people and the very old. It is a very unhealthy setting that will influence the whole world for along time to come. I'm worried about my old US friend Jack in a caretaking-home, whom nobody is allowed to visit and whose children live far away. Even for me, after 1 year of extremely reduced social contacts, it is getting harder and harder to stand. But, for young people it is many times harder.

The pharmaceutical companies should be developing vaccine that you put into beer, half of the Czech Republic would be vaccinated over a weekend.

Yesterday it was a year since the schools here closed. We had 39 positive cases back then. Yesterday we had 11 000 new ones. About 16000 couple days ago.
Curfew from 21:00, leaving the district only for work, doctors, etc, sport or walk only inside the municipality boundaries. It seems the severe regulations are slowly showing some results. Hospitals still full to the brim, however.
I absolutely agree that the results of all the regulations and homeschooling on the kids will have far longer lasting effects that on the economy.

Stay safe everyone,
Bob
