4" Mk Q Gun ?

Andy Naude

Well-Known Member
I saw this case over the weekend and was wondering if there was any information on it?

Calibre: 4" (105 mm)

Case Length: 670 mm

Stamping: 4" Mk Q GUN LOT KE 78

I am assuming that this is a South African case and possibly experimental. The case mouth is threaded.

There is no Lot number, which would normally have appeared below "LOT".

KE = I believe this to be Kimberly Engineering, South Africa.

Any information would be appreciated.

The Chilean Almirante Class Destroyers were fitted with Vickers 4" mk Q gun mounts.

Is it possible that Chile bought ammunition from South Africa for their guns?

Greetings
What is the rim diameter of this 102 x 670 R 4in Mk Q case ?
For interest there were experimental 4 inch Green Mace AA gun cases ...102 x 670 R x 175mm
Cheers

Big Gun Shell Cases by Jan Janssens refers to a case with similar dimensions:

Cal : 102 mm

Case Length: 670 mm

Rim: 174 mm

He refers to it as experimental in 1957 by Britain.

Tony Williams wrote about the 4" Green Mace AA and 4" Mk Q naval gun connection.
