Navy survival facility, NAS Pensacola, Florida

I self invited (and got very lucky) to tour a naval survival facility/course with my daughter on the base grounds. This class used to be much longer and bigger but changed over time. Basically it is how to find shelter and water and set up fire if you have almost nothing but your parachute. The large water tanks used to contain alligators, snapping turtles and crayfish, but now stand empty. Boeing Vetrol CH-46 helicopter was used to simulate a crash and how to evacuate and carry wounded out. That exercise is also abandoned and the hull itself will be destroyed (historical pictures). The tower in the ocean with a long cable was owned by USAF and was a training set to simulate landing in water with a parachute. The last year harricane destroyed it. Overall it was very enlightening and instructor's stories (he was an old Army Ranger) were very interesting. The entire base is under Code Charlie due to a terrorist attack last year which killed 3 people. So between that and COVID access to anything is difficult.
