Original finish on the No.22 rifle grenade?

I’m in the process of restoring a No.22 rifle grenade and I was wondering what the original finish was on them? Studying pictures suggests they were a black colour - is this paint, shellac, blackening, etc? Also interested to know what filling bands they had - some have red ones, but I don’t know if this is accurate.

Thanks,
Mark

After machining the bodies were coated inside and out with a mixture made from Gum Shellac :-

2lb 2 oz to one Gallon of Methylated Spirit

Painting was red band for filled, Green band for Amatol and Pink band for Ammonal. Red band was on the top row of segments. Explosive band in the middle segments.

The end result. Many thanks to Rick Stevens for manufacturing the reproduction rod and detonator assembly.
