Navel 6 pr case question

This is the base of a standard navel 6pr case.
It has seen a fair amount of use. What I find odd
is the threaded primer pocket. I have cleared out
the white material. I show a MKlll case for 1897
and this one a MKlll* for 1899 with quite a different
primer instalation. Is this normal or ?

I think Tig has it, lll* is a modified case, Mk lV is a case made this way.
How ever I have never seen a British fuze well threaded like this before.
The edge of the fuze would have to be threaded to fit. Usually they are threaded
under a plain rim ? Can anyone show an example of this primer or are there
evil forces at work here :tinysmile_angry2_t:

Diagram showing British Mark XIV (top) and Mark XIII (bottom) cartridges for QF 6 pounder Hotchkiss gun. These were the latest available rounds as at the beginning of 1915.
Mk XIV Cartridge was designated for Naval service :-

  • Case Mk III of solid drawn brass. Lacqured inside and out with transparent lacquer (standard for Naval service).
  • The percussion cap is of copper and contains 1.2 grains of cap composition.
  • Charge Mk IV is Cordite M.D. size 4 1/4. 8 oz 11 1/2 drams. Cut 9.5 inches long. Two fins 2.5 inches long each contain 1 dram cordite, pass through the charge to keep it centred in the case.
  • Mk VII Igniter contains 4 drams R.F.G.2 powder between 2 disks of shalloon.
  • Mk V Steel Shell shell is forged steel, head nearly 3 calibres radius. Filled with 4 oz QF shell F.G. powder. Painted black. Originally intended for anti-shipping use, not field use.
  • Hotchkiss base percussion fuze.
Mark XIII Cartridge was designated for Land or Naval service :-

  • Mk IV case with No. 2 Mk IV percussion primer.
  • Charge Mk III is Cordite M.D., 8 oz 11 1/2 drams, size 4 1/4.
  • No igniter. The magazine cylinder on the end of the primer acts as an igniter, and fits into the base of the charge and hence holds it in place.
The Case length is 12.087 inches, the complete round is about 19 inches.
Datedetails correct as at 1 August 1914
