L54A1 Markings Help

New Member
Hi All! I'm hoping to get some assistance with the markings on a L54A1 Illumination round if possible? I've found out what I can from here and elsewhere online but am still struggling with some of it. As well as attaching the images I've also put the markings below, along with any info I have on them so far:

Fuze
  • LOT SG-08G1403 - I'm assuming that the "08" is a manufacturing month, followed by the rest of the lot code.
  • DM 93-505.39 - The model of the Fuze, made by Junghans Feinwerktechnik
Body
  • SIL-08-061-VM-433 - Just a guess that "08-06" is Year then Month (2008-June). No clue about the rest
  • C173TT1 - No info on this line
  • (Painted on the front) 81mm M / ILUM / L54A1 / [Parachute symbol] / SIL 12-08071C” - Describes the round, giving the calibre, Munition type, L number. However the last (partially smudged) line is not as clear, again I'm thinking 12-08 is a date.
Tail
  • TVI80 RG08/08 - Guessing that TVI80 is a lot code or model number, and that it was made 08/08 in ROF Radway Green.
Cartridge
  • L39A1 G0 10/08 228 - "L39A1" is the model I guess? I could not find any clear answers online, given that L39A1 is also the number for a type of Enfield rifle. "10/08 228" is probably date again and lot code?

Any information would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Joe

Hello Joe,
can only help you with the fuze - the Lot numbers are from 1990 on like this with all Ordnance. SG is like you already knew Fa Junghans.
Here the way how to read this new coding system
Losbezeichnungen ab 1990_Seite_2.jpg
So your fuze is made by SG - Junghans in 2008 - month G is July and the Lot number is 1403
The DM 93 is a double acting time and impact fuze. Cant explain the numbers that follow the DM 93.

Thanks for that MT-LB, I'll be sure to keep a copy of that coding system reference for future use.

I'm assuming the text that follows after "DM 93" is something that Junghans use to identify the fuze perhaps, as the other example of a L54 on the forum also has the exact same mark (so it's probably not a lot/serial number)

Fuze
DM 93 - Deutsches Modellnummers, Zünder, Doppel, Zeit, Junghans Microtec GmbH for mortar

Body
SIL - Simmel Difesa SpA, Colleferro, Roma (subsidiary of Nexter Munitions S.A., France) (at the time in question, were part of Chemring)

Tail
TVI80 - TV is a British designation unique to mortars and I believe specifically mortar tail components. It's either a Drawing Number or Part No.

RG - BAE, Radway Green

Cartridge
GD - BAE, Glascoed. Date and Lot No.
