Jeux Interdits (1952)

1940, a column of Parisian refugees is attacked by German planes and a little girl's parents and her dog are killed https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043686/, she wanders into a French country side and into a large and poor family of farmers. The family takes her in. She is preoccupied with giving her puppy a proper burial and together with a young farmer's son they create a cemetery of various animals in an abandoned water mill. The boy starts stealing crosses for animals' graves which, combined with an old feud with a neighbour, creates very real and significant problems. Swaying from deadly serious to circus-like comic (farmers' fist fight when they fall into a fresh grave), this is a view of war and death seen through child's eyes.
The English translation of the title is "Forbidden Games" but I wonder if "Jeux" has some archaic meaning of "Toys".
I was fortunate to see old houses and barns like the ones in this movie when I visited a place called Titaguas in south central Spain, so I felt very comfortable with all the action in and around the old farm house.

One of the greatest movies I've ever seen
A fascinating guitar melody, that has become iconic by itself since this movie, is an integral part of the scenes and contributes to have this movie run deep into you soul and bring to surface a turmoil of emotions, some of them almost painful.
The message of hope and love of the last scene, in total contrast to the awful situation of the child, succeeds to brings these emotions to their peak.
Don't be mistaken - this is a very hard movie, but it's also a very tender and sweet movie, a real wonder.
And there is nothing to be ashamed if this movie brings you to the verge of tears.....
PS. "Jeux" means games, and more specifically children games, but also "casino games" where you stack your fortune on your chance, and, further, Jeu (single) means also "acting a role" (in theatre).
