It has also been suggested, due to the shape of the case, that it could be a type of COW gun proj

Does the case have any special markings that could help? Shape reminds me just a little bit of the German used WW2 Tungsten core projectile (without the actual core), but probably not (did not check drawings/dimensions).
    Ignorance is bliss.

No, sadly the base has been cut off the case for some reason, turned into an ashtray I expect!

The 37mm marine model 1927 (for model 1925 gun) proposed by Yodamaster is much longer than the Rrickoshae shell.
Here is a model 1937 exercise shell:

And here is the HE 1916 model with RSA 1933 fuse (note that the bottom band is smooth):

I think this eliminates guesswork, but I have no idea about this shell proposed by Rrickoshae. Sorry...

    Hello,
The shell is stamped 1935 (so not model 1937).
This shell seems to be fitted with a screwed head. On diagrams practice inert model 1927 and 1937 are one piece shells.
Any Live or Dug ordnance shown by me has been disposed of by EOD personnel .

    Hello Minenaz16,

Hello Minenaz16, Correct, dated 1935, it cannot be a 1937 model. According to the sketch below, the 1937 is not in one piece, but has a screwed base cap. A monoblock would have been far too heavy and internal machining made it possible to lighten it. As on the model (to be identified therefore ...) dated 1935 which was machined internally, with, it, a screwed warhead.
