Based upon an autobiographical novel "Blizzard of souls" by Aleksandrs Grīns, this movie follows a 17 year old Latvian boy who joins Russian Imperial Army in 1916 after Germans kill his mother. He goes to war with his father (a retired senior officer) and his older brother and loses both of them in battle. Then he and his fellow Latvian trench mates fall for Lenin's propaganda leaflets (sounds familiar?) and join the Red Army. Witnessing Reds' wanton murders, he returns to Latvia only to die in a battle against Germans as a Latvian volunteer. The meaning of "blizzard of souls" only becomes apparent in the last seconds of the movie. The movie relies on simple repeated actions and scenes to deliver its statement. Don't miss historical explanations at the end and some cool period photos.
