Who can help me with a drawing of the filling ( powder, leatherboard washerss/ cups, tin foil) of a 3,7 inch AAA HE shell. What exact size are the powder grains in the shellcase?
I’ve not seen a really detailed drawing of the 3.7” shell components before.
There are numerous filling drawings referenced in handbooks depending on the HE filling material. For TNT filling the Ministry of Defence reference drawings are DD/L/8029, 8029A and 8029B. But I don’t know what detail they show, perhaps only the method of filling. Someone may be able to locate the drawings for you.
I’ve reproduced some pages below from a 1939 3.7” gun handbook and also the shell drawing from the User Handbook of Anti-Aircraft Ammunition 1949.
The 1939 cartridge case filling is detailed as bundled sticks of Cordite W 124 (0.124 inch diameter). But I’m sure granular propellant would have been used later on.
Thank you very much gentleman, his is ging to be a hard one concerning the powdercharge with all these bend sticks. Now I have to find a way to make it look good. And the colour of the cordite sticks is yellow in this case , and not graphitated blacjk as the german powder.
Regards, DJH
