I'm unclear on the term 'generator grenade'. Can someone enlighten me?

The term can vary a bit by country, but essentially part one of the grenade (or generator) heats up to the point to where part two, containing the agent in a separate chamber, begins to smoke, generating the lacrimatory cloud. In US training chambers back in the 70s-80s they used to issue CS in capsules. You would place them on a metal plate, heated from below and thick clouds of smoke would be released. Same principle.

So generator grenades by definition would not have an explosive detonator, but rather an igniter of some sort to start the heating process?

Yes, everything I have ever seen was burning. This includes US BZ munitions, also frequently known as generators.
