Sir William Denny devised a system of mechanical stabilizers which could be extended from a ship in rough weather. A system was produced in conjunction with the Brown brothers and was called the Denny Brown stabilizer.
They look and work muck like the pectoral fins on fish. The fins are mounted amid ship and could be turned against the motion of the ship, thereby automatically dampening it. A roll of ten degrees could be damped out in seconds.
Virtually all modern cruise ships and private luxury yachts have gyro controlled stabilization systems. Some systems today are continuously extended whether in use or not while others are retractable.
