No 36M Mk1 grenade recovered in Iraq

Presented here is an inert No 36M Mk1 grenade and detonator can recovered from Iraq. Although not as commonly encountered in Iraq today, this grenade is still represented in the Iraqi Army Grenade Manual (Saddam Era) along with the Soviet F-1, RG-42, RKG-3 Czech RG-4, Italian SMK 83 smoke grenade.

Hi Alan,
nice 36, made by BBC. Can you give me more info on the base plug? Looks like it was made by M F, possibly Munitions Footscray, an Australian firm which makes for an interesting combination. Can you give me the date on the plug too, my poor old peepers cant quite make it out.
Were many such 36s found in Iraq? Nice tin too.

Hi Andy,

Sorry for the poor quality pictures, my camera does not do detailed close-ups very well. The bottom of the plug has the following No36M Mk 1 58 and a 'S' imposed over a smaller 'L'. Looking from below into the grenade, there is a 58 'N' and 1 next to a 'S' imposed over a smaller 'L'. The only markings I can locate on the spoon is a 'K' with three stars.

I would be interested in any manufacturing information you could tell me about the grenade. There was a small group of inert grenades that were being used as training aids at an Iraqi base. I believe there were at least three of these grenades that were retained for training purposes.

Hi Alan,
the body of the gren seems to be marked BBC, British Bath Co, Greenford and the lever marked with the K in stars is Kenricks of Willenhall, Stafford.Not sure about the base plug, it may be that there are members more knowledgeable who can help. I reccon the plug was made in 1958 though.
Still, a nice gren though, thanks for the piccies.

normally the 36M in Iraq are made from Pakistan Ordnance Factory.

It is possible to have a copy of the Iraqi Army Grenade Manual (Saddam Era) ??

I have one of these but the body is marked IBR Ideal Boilers and Radiators London.. the base plug is identical. the mark SL is the manufacturer S. Joseph Stokes rubber Co according to dave sampsons site on mills grens. the lever is marked S.G. & Co. not sure of this maker.

My listing for “SL” is “Sparklets Ltd.” Who were die casters and with the base plug being Mazak I would have thought more their line of work.
Is that ‘N’ a ‘Z’? which would signify that it is made of Zinc alloy (Mazak)
SG & Co may well be Stanley Gorman Ltd, London
The detonators were filled by ICI, West Quarter, Glasgow.

Andy, Tim and Paul, thanks for the information, very much appreciatted. Paul, your grenade looks very familiar to mine. Tim, I believe you are coorect, it should be a 'Z' and not an 'N'. Frencesco_Dif and jayteepee_1999, I will work on scanning some of the Iraqi grenade manual in. The problem being that the Iraqi's printed very poor quality, highly reproduced manuals and the pictures are not very clear to begin with, but give me some time and I will see waht I can do.

There was an Iraqi Ordnance guide that pictured the Pakistani verison of the grenade, but the updated version appears to not show it. Might be of use for your reference;
