In Australian Army Service these were used for transporting Proof Samples. The Box came with a tin plate liner with a removable lid. The lid sealed into a groove in the liner filled with luting. 8140-66-030-1958

1The C190 box was used as a general purpose container .

2 It could be used for explosive or non explosive stores .
3 In Naval use it was painted Mid Brown in colour or Red
Hope this info helps

I have over 120 listings of various natures that are/were or could optionally have been packed in a C190 across all 3 UK services.

I just came across a 1942 dated C190 I in its original grey paint and original labels on saying it held 28 linked HV rounds for the 2-Pounder QF gun.

Flea Market C190 I

Usually pick P59s, B166s and B167s but recognised this and knew it was early because of the webbing material handles. It was black all over and very oily and greasy do couldn't see any stamps or marks.

Luckily the black paint? cleaned of with degreaser revealing C190 I 1939 RALC and a large N and the stencilling showed up. This held just like the one in the last post, 28 cartridges for the QF 2 pounder. Seems most on the label in the last post is stencilled on mine so should be easier to work out. It has EXAMD CRB 3.9.41 to one side. I thought the two red lines on the top had been added later but the one in the last post has them too.
I assume they weren't painted grey, the grey being the oxided galvanising, but where they lacquered?
One thing is, they are bloody heavy as I had to carry it a fair way back to the car. Did they revise the design later to save material?

Having studies the lettering I think it looks like this:
Looks like a letter after FZD No2 but can't work it out.
Font size is either 3/8 or 7/16.
