1 pounder COW gun round

The photo shows a standard 1.5 pounder apc COW gun round next to the experimental 1 pounder COW gun round. I've also attached a photo of the headstamp of the 1 pounder.

If anyone has any further information on the 1 pounder COW gun I would be interested in hearing from them.

Dave.

Hi thanks for the links, what a great site your friend has!!
My wants list just got longer.
Dave.

Cow

You have what looks like the early rimless cartridge, can you post a really clear image of the headstamp. I don't think this has been seen by many.

Shell, QF, 1.186-inch

Not quite COW but thought this may be of interest to Gordon and Dave. Designed to meet a Navy requirement for an "intermediate calibre automatic multiple equipment... capable of destroying within six seconds an aircraft at ranges of up to 2,500 yards", the weight of a 2 Pr equipment with increased muzzle velocity being prohibitive.[OB 1935]

Thanks Norman, that's quite a long projectile, a bit like the Mk 5 aircraft gun projectile, I'm surprised it only weighs 1 pound.

I've attached a few better pictures of the headstamp of my round.

Dave.

Interesting shell. Were any actually ever made, and are any shells or cases known to have survived?

1 Pounder

I don't know if the shell got off the drawing board. A pressure barrel [Design DD(G)259A] was constructed so conceivably some projectiles were produced for tests - maybe not the design that I posted. A cart case [DD(L)6718] was designed for the pressure barrel but again it is not clear if any were made. The pressure barrel was kept for future tests on small calibre equipments/projectiles.

By 1936 the QF 1-pr equipment had been dropped and designs worked up for a 1 1/2 Pr. Sadly for collecting folk the 1 1/2 Pr was dropped in January 1937.

Dave might have one of course :tinysmile_shy_t:

Just a few more facts about the 1 pounder COW.
In 1913 a total of 150 rounds were produced for tests. Following that an unknown number of cases were made. Of the rounds I know of at least one is a fired case.
The projectiles used were standard Vickers 1 pounder projectiles.
Dave.

Hi
The shell on the casing is entirely out of brass, partially hollow, of beautiful fabriquation of after war time, simulating a 1Pr (not a real shell)

I would be very interested in A4-sized scans of any drawings concerning both 1 pr and 1 pr cases and projectiles. Do you have any you could send me?

According to Campbell's 'Naval Weapons of WW2', the 1 pr was in 34.5mm calibre.

1-Pr & 1 1/2-Pr Dwgs

Tony,

I have a couple of drawings and will send scans of them to your email address.
