WWII German Ordnance still dangerous

I'm almost certain that there was no number on the case base otherwise it would have been written down, just the markings I listed previously. It sounds like your case is identical to the one that I had.

The mystery deepens....!

Hi Guys, Just registered on the site. 12.8cm The Pak 44 L/55 shell case is 869mm long, 192mm across the base and the mouth is 165mm wide.
case identification number is 6398.
What you have is the Flak case.

Hi Quatermass, welcome to the site, and thanks for that answer. Do you have a picture or drawing of the case? Its interesting that the mouth of the case is 165mm dia and the projectile is 128mm. Was the case shortened (neckless) due to space inside the vehicle?

I guess a separate loaded case doesn't need to be as long as a fixed round case?
The area of the case that holds the projectile would be unnecessary in separate loading ammo.
The savings in terms of weight and size would be appreciated by the loaders. I don’t know that’s the reason for the shorter case but it seems to make sense.
It should also be remembered that while Pak 44/80 was used in the Jagdtiger it was also used on a field carriage (12.8 K 44 and K81/1&2) it’s a bit like describing all 17 pounder rounds as Firefly rounds.
I'll see what I can do about a picture.

What are you guys doing now that ebay has stopped people listing ordnance? I've got a collection of 17 pdrs that I want to sell but I'm a bit stuffed now. Any ideas?

I'd echo Burney's views on this the place to go now is www.specialistauctions.com. I don't know how many people still look at eBay, but you could always list your 17PDR there if only to get additional names of people interested in your item...then follow up when the item gets pulled.

Additionally, you could be even more cheeky and tell them its for sale on www.specialistauctions.com (ordnance section) in your eBay listing.

I don't know if eBay will keep the listing fee if they pull an item, but I half suspect as a modern organisation, they'll have no ethics and will keep the money...eitherway, probably worth it for the extra audience.

Oh btw, count me as one of the people interested in the 17PDR's....so by all means PM me, to let me know when and where any auctions start, or buy-it-now deals start.

Not that I doubted you in anyway, I managed to acquire a large number of waffen revues, and in issue 51, is details of the Jagdtiger and munitions.

So ammunition used in the 12,8cm PaK44 L/55 gun is as follows: -
Case:
165x870R (192mm Base) and appears to have a \"wrapped\" steel sheet contruction.
(see picture below)
Projectiles:
12,8cm Pzgr 43 (28,3Kg vo=920m/s)
12,8cm Spr Gr L/5,0 (28Kg vo=750m/s)

The picture below clearly shows the cases in stowage, the wrapped steel construction as well as the large 16,5cm case diameter of the mouth versus the 12,8cm projectile diameter.

Finally, as everyone has told me, i have a Flak40 Case. ...ill summarize the 12,8cm cases in the next post.

I've had an interest in ordnance since I was a little guy, it is only now that it is becoming more serious. I have collected a lot of things in the past and I have learned that, for me at least, it is better to not spread oneself too thinly. I am gravitating to Brit and US material for a few reasons, not the least of which is that the references are accessible. That is to say that English is my first language and I don't really care to wrestle with anything else.

Just a thought.
