This ones definitely not all real, the outer magnesium cap has been replaced the core painted. The real versions are quite hard to find because unless the magnesium cap is kept sealed from the air by paint etc it corrodes and turns to white dust.

It'll do until I get a real one. Whoever restored this did a very good job.

The magnesium is blackened from the grease or what ever they used to preserve them, one spot of decay. If you have an original wax or grease it, wax I think might be better. There are two versions, the earlier one has more exposed core Mle 35 ? . The aluminiun replacement would look better anodized (or corroded a tad to roughen it) to a darker grey then rubbed with black shoe polish, or something .

Nice projectile Gordon. I may play around and try and age the repro.

Attached a photo of the other version (as you showed). Unlike the other one I showed this one is original. I sprayed the outside of the magnesium cap with paint, the inside has a lot of grease in it. Unusual in that it unscrews.

Nice one, I think they were kept greased, that is why it still comes apart, non I have had would.

Does any one know how effective these were, It's difficult to think that they were very good in 1940, except maybe on a MK1 German tank - close up.
