on the front there is swastika and eagle and the letters L E M in reverse

Smithy's Stamp

Fron the look of the photo I think it might be a Smiths Stamp used for identifying his work *sort of trade mark stamp) bit like the Waff stamp on German WW2 items ?

If so it would have been pressed into a hot metal item - hence the letters are reversed ! once embossed on the item made it would read LEM as you state'

Hi Armystuff, please bear in mind that it is only a guess taken from my own use of an individual stamp that was assigned to me during an apprentiship-everything i did had to have my own personal stamp on it !
So I never got away with any bodge ups !:tinysmile_cry_t3:

A very nice and very rare item what ever it is.

Just had this posted ref the hammer stamp thingy on another site
"this hammer was used to mark the property of lumber in forestry. The manufacturers plate on the handle reads "Wilhelm Ghlers Forstwerkzeuge". "Forstwerkzeuge" means tools for forestry."
