27 x 143B Mauser experimental round.

The photographs show a 27 x 143 B experimental cannon round that I recently managed to add to the collection.
I had some information about this round but have managed to lose it (quite frustrating as I've been after one of these for years!) so if anyone can help out with more information it would be appreciated.
The first photo shows the round on its own.
The next one shows it next to a standard DEFA round and a standard 27 x 145B Mauser service cannon round. The rim on the experimental one is 33 mm compared to the service rounds 34mm but the thing to note is that the belt on the 27 x 143 is the same as on a DEFA not the same as on the 27 x 145.
Other things to note are the odd shaped projectile that sits inside the case and the screw in primer.
Headstamp is "LOS M 1 71"
All rounds shown are INERT etc.
Thanks.
Dave.

There was an article about some of these experimental 27x145B predecessors in the German ECRA bulletin and sowith must have been in the English version as well. Anyone here who has it?

Thanks I'll have a look through the bulletins and see what I can find.
Dave.

Fortunately I have a searchable index for the last six years of ECRA bulletins (since I became editor) so can tell you that this round was illustrated and discussed in May 2006 (493-2) and September 2006 (497-12). According to Robert Gerber, the short round was tested by General Dynamics in the Mauser B gun in the early 1970s.

Thanks Tony that's fantastic, I'll read up on it later.

A bit more on this one:

It was for the Mauser Mod B (20mm) cannon with
a special barrel. The overall length had to be no longer than the 20mm HSS
820 cartridge. The 27mm cases were modified in Germany and sent to the US with the projectiles, and were loaded by Hercules. Firings took place in 1972.

I love the way in which the seller managed to slip in "Messerschmitt"!

Anything with a WW2 German reference :tinysmile_hmm_t:
