Is this an unexploded AA shell?

    Hi,

my father in law has just dug this up from his garden, I believe it may be an unexploded Anti air craft shell, he is in the process of contacting the proper channels to get it removed but would like to know a bit more about it if anyone can help?

    heres the facts..
It was dug from a garden that is well within range of many WW2 anti aircraft gun batteries, (centre of the Isle of Wight)

Its approx 40mm across the base, about 60mm tall, has the letter M stamped on the side and has an intact screw in the top,

any info would be great, thanks.

Looks like a WW1 one pounder projectile.
Its not been fired, the driving band is not engraved.
He's done the right thing contacting the authorities, much better to be safe.
As for it being buried - who knows why, could be it was something brought back from the war that someone didn't want to keep so dug a hole.
    Dave.

See attached link for more details.

You have a WW1 1 pounder (pdr) British 'pom pom' shell. The markings would be 'VSM' - Vickers Sons and Maxim.

It looks to be unfired and intact, therefore live, so leave it where it is and call the authorities to have it removed.
