    .303 contract labels

.303 ammunition was ordered from both Winchester and Western in 1940 and intended for RAF use. The early cases were only headstamped as "40" instead of "1940" so boxes were marked accordingly. However, the quality of the initial lots was poor and as it was not considered aircraft grade the boxes were overprinted "NOT FOR USE IN AIRCRAFT", even though they were printed in red. Later, the ammunition was downgraded to practice only and by 1945 had been condemned as unserviceable.

I particularly like the one marked "NOT FOR USE IN BREN GUN". This dates from when the ammunition was considered only fit for ground use in rifles.
