    SOE Clock Fuzes

    Switch,

The Short Time clock (Eureka) was designed to fire a Type 6 Burster after a delay of between ½ hour and 6 hours. It is about 3 ½ inches long and 2 ¼ inches in diameter and weighs about 1 ¼ lbs. The ‘Eureka’ comes from the fact that it was originally designed to be used in association with an exploder of that name that fitted in small radio sets. It was designed by Colonel King of SOE Station IX in about January 1943 and based on a 7-day movement from Smiths. It was not available operationally until 1944, Smith & Sons and Station XII being involved in the manufacture of about 300.

The Clock Fuze, Adjustable, 7-Day in its waterproof case is about 4 1/2in long and 2 1/2in in diameter and weighs about 1 ½ lb. It uses the same clockwork mechanism as the Eureka Clock and it can be set to give an accurate delay up to 6 days 23 ½ hours. It was developed by Messrs Sutton and Foulsham at Station IX with contributions from Smiths, Cambridge University and Station XII. It could be used with a limpet at a depth of up to 20 feet. Functional Trials were conducted in April 1945 and very few were made before the war ended.

    Brilliant N.

Thank you very much - Something else to add to my "one day" list.

Do any other members have any similar items?

    Cheers
