Can anyone tell me what the proper paint & markings would be for this 3.7" AA projectile? There are no markings(that I can see) anywhere on the shell. It is currently in pretty rough shape and I would like to clean it up and repaint/remark it properly. Thanks, Marshall

    Hi Marshall,

Nice shrapnel projectile....interesting fuse - looks solid? Perhaps a training cut-away?

    (Normally the fuses would be No 199, 106, 107 & 208)

I'm sure someone has the complete projectile colour schema and will reply.
(There is a picture of a re-painted HE one in my gallery and from memory it was painted correctly)

    Cheers
    Drew

No.8 Appears to be a 25pr BE Smoke projectile, sitting in an 18pr case. The 18pr (at 3.3in dia) is not much slimmer than the 25pr (3.45in dia). However, the 25pr is a QF Separate Loading system, whereas the 18pr was QF Fixed.

Having another "closer" look at the pics this time, you are right in that it is not an APT - actually now looks like a HE with the base thread, blunt nose and spanner slots (you can see them in one of the pics). I compared the pics to one of my 2pr AT APT projectile, which clearly doesn't have a threated base for a base fuse and pointed nose.

...and I'll just stick with my couple of WW1 HE Pom Poms :-)

Its a Naval practice round incorrectly repainted as AP.

Yeah that makes sense as the fuse /nose just didn't look right.

    Thanks
    Cheers
