Hi Folks,

Here is a Japanese Navy Type 91 Mod 1 Torpedo Gyroscope. It was made by Mitsubishi in Nagasaki. This gyroscope was used in the Type 91 Aerial Torpedo.

They are a very interesting item and create a lot of intrigue.

Jason pointed me to this this very interesting web site on Japanese Gyroscopes;

You will have to get Google Chrome to translate it from Japanese, great photos.

Cheers,

Superb photography.

Was honored to have this one briefly in hand. An awesome addition to the collection.

You oughta show that transit. :)

You oughta show that transit. :)

It was an overcast day with good diffused light and no shadows, so it was perfect for my photography. So I took the white sheets of cardboard outside and started snapping away. I should have the brass bolt that broke in transit restored by the end of the week. So I only took photos of the Theodolite and will photograph the tripod when the bolt is finished and I have the right light conditions.

I have the photos that I took today edited now and ready for posting but first up must do some research and get some translations.

Cheers,
Robert

Japanese Navy Type 91 Torpedo Gyroscope

Here is the latest edition to my collection. It is a Japanese Navy Type 91 Torpedo Gyroscope. This is different from the previous one shown which is a Type 91 Model 1.

I like this one, it looks cool with the huge calibration dial on top.

Hello Bougainville,
Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures of your Japanese Gyroscopes. I am an avid collector of Japanese ordnance and other Showa Dynasty items but never thought that I would have the opportunity to own one of these. Two days ago, that changed and I am now the proud owner of a Type 98 Japanese torpedo gyroscope.
The translation of the above document on the Type 98 is a bit jumbled but it appears that this gyroscope was used on submarine torpedos and surface ship torpedos. It boasts a highly efficient air driven (compressed oxygen) flywheel to allow for a greatly extended range over the earlier versions and this can be seen by a ring of very tiny air vanes in the center of the driven wheel as opposed to the much larger vanes in the ones pictured above. The air nozzle is also quite unique and has a tiny, focused orifice.
My pictures are not nearly as good as Bougainville's but I hope you enjoy them!
Thanks, Pat
