Some photos of some 9mm Kaltmann rounds in a friends collection.

This is one of the many experiments done at Rheinmetall beginning in the mid-1970s by the engineer Hans-Joachim Kaltmann for the development of an electric-primed caseless round, which was to have a tungsten core, and penetration of 50mm of armor plate with a velocity of 1300 M/sec.

The first photo is a photograph of a photograph of a much wider range of rounds.
The rest are photos of rounds in his collection.
The grey steel items apparently are tools of some sort used in the manufacturer of them.

There is more information on the link below. I couldn't get it to translate but I'm sure you'll get the general idea.

All rounds in the photo are inert/primers oiled etc etc.

If anyone has more info or rounds in their collection please would you post them on this thread. I've seen a lot of experimental rounds but these are certainly some of the strangest ones I've seen so far :tinysmile_eyebrow_t.

The only info I have is in my article on the history of assault rifles and ammo: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/Assault.htm

Other oddities were the Belgian Schirnecker rounds of various sizes which fired saboted bullets from straight steel cases, and the 9/4mm Kaltmann in which the plastic cartridge case was expected to follow the bullet down the barrel.

Exotic attempts: 5.56x45 with Monad bullet, 4.5mm Schirnecker, 9/4mm Kaltmann (development round, with part-metal case), 5.56mm Folded, 5.56mm Hughes Lockless, 5.56mm US caseless, 6mm Voere caseless, early HK G11 4.7x21 rounds, final G11 4.7x33

Hi Dave,

Here are the rounds I have in my collection...

Regards,
Paul
