Can anyone identify this item photoraphed on the Somme last week?

DSCF2851.jpg Can anyone identify this item photographed during a visit to Redan Ridge on the Somme? It is about 6" in diameter and about 24" long. It is rounded at one end (no sign of any fuse cap or plug) with what appears to be a very thin case. Needless to say it remains where we found it. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.
