Show us your Wooden Drill Rounds

75 mm Drill

Head stamp: Rh.M.F. NOV 1910 DUSSELDORF

Primer and fuze is marked: Ex

Overall length: 344 mm

Really not sure exactly which this calibre this is, but it may be for the 75 mm Ehrhardt Model 1904. 12 of these guns were issued to the Portuguese colonial forces in Angola.

When I received it there was yellow paint on the fuze. I took the decision that it was not original paint. This paint has now been removed.

Thanks for the great read of the previous drill rounds. I have at least 5 more wooden drill rounds for you. I need to take photos tomorrow.
I have 12Pr 12 cwt Australian, 4" wood early, 5.5" gun wood projectile, 3"20cwt Australian, 4.5" navy base of drill cartridge.

Steel base with lifting grip. Chromed brass top and shoulder ring. Etched arcoss base in 4 lines: (very hard to read)
MBO 3/1960
INO No 61205A
REPRESENTATIVE CASE & LID. CJJD. No1

I was told it may be a dummy for carriers/containers as a gauge for size ?

Can anyone ID this please , could it be some form of drill bag charge ? possibly Naval or coastal .DSCF5319.jpgDSCF5319.jpg
Any theories welcome.
It has 'N0 11' Stamped into the base and it is from a military source.

75 x 143 R 88 Ehrhardt Drill rounds

In my previous post the drill round, dated 1910, was still a mystery calibre. I have subsequently found cases and two more drill rounds in this calibre. I believe that these were for the 7.5 cm Ehrhardt Mountain Guns. 75 x 143 R88. 12 of these were supplied by Germany to German South West Africa.

40mm Wooden Drill Round.

I don't remember seeing this one, without the brass top. It is a used cut down case where a wooden projectile/body was inserted. But may be someone has more info?

75 x 350 French Wooden Schrapnel Drill Round

This is one of my favourites, it's in relatively good condition and considering the amount of guns the French manufactured it is quite a rare one. The fuze is a mock-up, the body is made of wood, hollow as far as I can tell (it sounds like there's a little bit or a loose screw rattling inside when shaken) and the base is quite likely made from a rejected case which was machined down. The fuze bears many "debouchoir" holes and although the shell was well used it still shows a lot of what I think is the original grey paint, which was the colour of the artillery at the time. What I don't have is the exact nomenclature, can someone tell me which type/model this is? Thanks.

Nice and rare drill round.
No designation in french documentation, only "Fausse cartouche" pour canon de 75mm.
In France we usually calle dummy/drill round : cartouche de manipulation

Hi Guys, I have another round to submit to your knowledge... It's a 81mm mortar shell, possibly German, made of wood and steel. I dismounted it to show the various parts. The bottom cone appears to be steel with a brass sleeve, the top cone below the fake fuze is entirely made of steel. Marks are plenty: P 24-44 on the bottom section, S1/50 or 51/50 + + ena on the middle section and 6545. The tail fin part seems to have olive and red paint, the red being underneath.

SO Awesome you are figuring this one out and have discovered missing parts that you can replicate. Stoked about this!

Jason

Regarding the S-Gun drill round SG500 showed on the first page. Theres proably an obvious answer, but ts crossed my mind as to why a drill round is needed for an autocannon ? I had always assumed Drill rounds were for training a human loader, can I assume these Drill rounds were used to check the mechanism of an auto-cannon or was there a non-autocannon version?

Or Something else altogether?
Rich

Very nice items Ozzie. I had not seen a 1.5" Nord. Drill before plus still looking for a 6Pr 7 Cwt drill. Nice to say hello again.
