Brass 23mm Round??

hello, I have been passed these through the family, but am unsure on their use or history. Some suggestion was made of being japanese AT rounds?

They are what looks like milled solid brass with a copper band or three at the tail end, vary in length between 67mm tip to copper band to 84mm, all with a dia of 23mm, some differences in the band groves on the tip of projectile, the longer having a blunt head. All have the same tail tip 9mm dia.

the weigh 246g 270g, 335g and 342 g in order.

there are two casings also which measure 65mm long 26mm dia witha slight ejection rim and nipple rather than a percussion cap? Not sure if they are for these rounds though.

Sorry for any technical terms being incorrect, I am to learn! Please ask for anything to help identify them

Alex

Have the cases been cut off the projectiles ? Is there still a ring of brass around the projectiles below the driving bands ? I really don't know what they are however they look quite old.

The cases look to me like the projectiles have been fired from them rather than cut out, there a crimped edge around each case and slightly split, like I have seen on say a shotgun cartridge when fired?
When you mean a ring of brass around the projectile below the driving bands, I am a little stuck on the meaning. The bands look like they have been slid over the main brass body which still sits underneath them, So I guess that might be what you mean about the brass?

Thank you for the reply though, and I look forward to them being hopefully identified.

I thought that the cases could have been cut from the projectiles leaving a portion of the case on the projectile between the bottom of the driving band and the base of the projectile. They are interesting looking and cant wait for someone to identify them.
Cheers, SHAKY

Ahh now I understand your meaning, I don't think the day at Army vs Navy yesterday helped me try to understand it last night!

Looking at the pictures of the "cartridge cases" it appears to me the base portion is cast brass (look at the inside view of the case on the left in the picture above and you can see all the jagged holes from casting the brass) with thin wall brass tubes attached to the cast bases. Look at the case rims you can see were the brass tube ends before the cast base rim. The projectiles, I believe, are early miniatures. Nice items!.

I will add a pic from the inside of the cases, as i thought they were perhaps remenants of the propellant, but now maybe they look like wood or cork material? Are they stoppers for something being inserted?

Thanks for the links, more reading tonight :)
