Saumur Tank museum sectioned QF cartridges and missiles

AE501

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
I have just been to Saumur Tank museum (Musee des Blindes). I spent4 hours over 2 different days taking over 200 photos and some short pieces of video.
They have a small area of sectioned ammunition, including QF cartridges and missiles, also cabinets of ammunition. There is also a nice exhibit showing an APFSDS petal separation sequence.
I cannot do much about the tanks and other things because when I have tried in the past, the items do not stay in the sequence I put them in, rather they seem to revert to the order in which I took the photos, which makes a bit of a nonsense when I took a photo of a Tiger II from the front on one day then took closeups of the info boards and side and rear views on another day.
I could not get close to the cabinets because of the ropes which you are not supposed to cross.
I see RichardB has taken some photos but not on the scale that I did.
I have included two views of the Hornet with Malkara missiles mounted, which have Goliath (which is a piece of ammunition) in between. The display board has this as British , which is true of the vehicle but the missiles were an Australian invention. When these were no longer required and were unsaleable it was decided that the best way to dispose of them was to fire them and the hit probability results were amazingly good.

Very nice photos, and good quality for having to deal with their barricades. I would have been back and spent a lot of time taking photos too, if I had the chance to go there. That's a cool museum.

Some great photos. Wish I can visit there some time.

A small bit of advice with the photo problem. Rename the photos (A - Z) (1 - 1001), according to the way you want them to display. Otherwise it will sort according to the date.

went there a few years ago,no ropes in the way then I think,at least they are putting ordnance on display which is nice to see,
you don't get much of it on show to public in UK.
I seem to remember they had a sectioned tank engine on display there.
Also a German tank with 6pr holes in it and one projectile stuck half way through the front armour,
it was captured and re used by the British, that's good resicling.
Tim.

It's a great museum and I'd recommend it to anyone. Fine selection of tanks from the earliest to the latest. Incredible German collection. The impression I came away with was that the French Tanks of 1940 were better than either the British or German tanks of the same period.

Only about 30% of the collection is on display. They have sheds and sheds of vehicles awaiting restoration or they don't have display space for. As a collection I think its one of the largest worldwide.

Don't hang around - go there!

John

By chance we will be going on holiday to a place near Saumur and my wife found out about this museum while reading up on the area. I thought I might see if any forum members had already visited it, so thanks to AE501 for the photos on the three threads.

Yep - with a large batch of photos to display I always put "aa" at the start of the first file, "ab" in front of the next, and so on. By the time I've reached "zz" that gives a total of 676 file IDs! If I change my mind over the ordering, I just add a third letter.
