Sherman Common

Parts common to all marks of Sherman tank? Am I thinking too simplistically? is it to do with a Common Shell?, though the box looks more 1940's than 1900's. Alternatively it could be for a Sherman Hoff Valve, pt number A12507......
Sorry not much use really but a bit of food for thought
