Got this very nice Oerlikon 30mm GCM A-01 ship mount gun model today. Had to replolish the brass plate, wax the wood and wash the model clean of years of dust with warm water and an old tooth brush. but shurely a nice piece.
I believe it was used by the royal navy on their frigates.
Regards, DJH

As a part of the Navy's general "up-gunning" after the Falklands War, this was used on Type 22 frigates and Type 42 destroyers (in the latter case, it was soon replaced by 20mm Phalanx CIWS). It was also fitted to the destroyer Bristol and the amphibious warfare ship Intrepid, and its last user was the RFA Argus. It is now out of service.

Got Lucky again , adding this very nice model of a 20mm Oerlikon gun type GAM BO-1 to the model collection. It fires the 20x128 cartridge , either the 20x110 RR cartridge.

Regards. DJH

Some nice models you are getting!

The GAM BO-1 mounts an Oerlikon KAA cannon in 20 x 128 calibre. A few are still in service with the RN on auxiliary type vessels for pirate-bashing.

I had thought that 20mm guns in general, and the 20 x 128 ones in particular, were on the way out, but Rheinmetall recently announced a new version of the gun (the KAE) in the Searanger and Landranger remote-controlled mountings, and a new SAPPIE loading of the ammo.

Very nice models,

Tony, 20mm is staying and is the new standard for all Royal Navy ships as close support/defense weapons. HMS Ocean is the only ship left with Goalkeeper and is due to be decommissioned next year or early 2018 all being well, that will be the end of 30mm for the Navy. The Army are due to loose the 30mm Rarden on the introduction of the new series of AFV's as the new AFV's are going to be armed I believe with a 40mm gun.

Ah yes, I should have mentioned the Phalanx CIWS - something of a special case.

The departure of Goalkeeper isn't the end of 30mm guns in the RN, though: the DS30B mounting with an Oerlikon KCB in 30x170 calibre, the RN's standard light cannon replacing the 40mm Bofors, was adopted after the Falklands and is now being replaced by the ASCG (DS30M Mk 2) with a MK44 (Bushmaster II) gun in 30x173 calibre.

The Army's new Ajax recce vehicle and the revamped Warrior will both be equipped with the 40mm CTWS.
