German WW1 case for Russian Mountain Gun

Well-Known Member
I took a chance on this case as my initial impression was that it was a cut example of the steel based cases for the 77mm C96 N/a. However, after careful measuring I think it is a German made case for the Russian 76.2 mm M1909 mountain gun. The measurements are rim 87mm, length 190mm and mouth 76mm. These measurements are very close to the case dimensions from the Russian gun. I suspect the Germans captured a few in the early part of WW1 and then made use of them. The only marking I can identify is a 16, which I would take to be the date of manufacture 1916. Glad to have your views. Pictured against an C96 case, length 230mm, for comparison.

I think I have the same case. My case meassures 76,2 x 191,5 R87 (same headstamp like yours).

My initial thoughts were the same as yours but I am unsure if it is a 76,2 or 75 mm. A 76,2 mm projectile fits very tight inside, a 75 mm is a little bit loose.

Hello everyone,
This raises a question: as far as I know steel based cases for the 77mm C96 N/a are the only known examples of steel base cases. Obviously, I may be wrong, however I have seen steel cases for other calibres, such as 10.5cm or 15cm, but never any mixed metal case. Does anyone have a casing made of both metals other than 7.7cm?

one more for example I know is the german made 75x129R for the Austro-Hungarian Skoda 7,5 cm M.15 mountain gun.

I posted a couple of pictures of a brass and steel 10cm K04 case that is in a museum on the Somme, comes up when you search 10cm.

I also have a steel based case for the 75mm Krupp field gun (75x277) which was used by many nations in WW1. Photo tomorrow.

Attached are a couple of pictures of a German steel based case for the 75mm field gun, 75x277mm. Primer is manufactured by Krupp.

Hello,
The symbol at twelve o'cock: a sqare with rounded sides inscribed in o circle is the logo of Rheinmetall. I have the same on a primer dated 1936. See

I had never seen before these cases 76,2x190 and 75x277 with the base of iron. They are typically Rheinmetal made. I show what I have as identical construction:a 75x129R ( 7.5 M 15) quoted by Alpini and a 76,2x385R for Russians guns.
Pic 1: the two cases.
Pic 2: the 76,2x385R

hi Dandebur, see the attached which is 75 x 115R. Would you consider this to be cut down or was there a 115mm case length? Apart from the Rheinmetal mark, the only marks in the steel base that I can find are 12 & 1 (left & right of the primer)

The case shown at the start of the topic is a 76,2x191R87 case. They are actually common in my view, I owned several while not collecting WW1. They exist as Russian, German (I have only seen this type with steel base), Finnish (WW2) and Swedish (WW1, never seen). Interestingly my Finnish case is stamped 76 so I am also not 100 % sure about the caliber. But it is not 75 for sure.

Hi Fert,

Interesting case, never seen and I have no information.

Hello Rrickoshae,
I don't know if your case is cut down or not. I have no information about it. Sorry.
Regards ,
Dandebur.
