Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, Ontario

I was told that this museum was designed to confuse and disorganize visitors thus emulating the war itself. Congratulations, total success!!!! This is the least visitor friendly museum I know. The pieces are placed in a haphazard manner disallowing any sequential visit, the lighting is atrocious, basement is in disarray historically, with large windows preventing picture taking. If war is hell, so is a visit to this museum. Compounding this, I was there during a free admission day (Canada Day) which brought huge giggling families with hundreds of children, so to take a clear shot of anything was VERY difficult. Based on this, I am becoming pro-peace (and against horribly designed museums). This said, many items are rare and interesting.

I suppose you don't have the accompanying description of the torpedo above the green tail /body one in photo #1178? (123689)

{I guess there's two chances of you having a close-up of that torpedo pistol?................................}

No, but I requested it from the museum. If they send it to me, I'll add it to this post.

I live about a 20 minute drive from the museum. Its certainly not the most well laid out thats for sure. The large open display area as far as I know is not meant to be displayed in a historical manner, simply groups of similar items (artillery guns in one area, tanks in another etc). If anyone ever wants some pictures of stuff there I would be glad to have an excuse to go! :tinysmile_fatgrin_t

Perhaps on your next trip to the museum, if you could possibly get a couple close-up pics of the torpedo pistol it would be greatly appreciated (+ the torpedo description)

The deep curved "whiskers" are of particular interest.

Unfortunately although there are many "torpedoes" in museums, most are missing the pistols or have the dummy /practice head in place.

Thank you
Cheers
Drew

Thanks, Spaceinvader, for your help with this torpedo. I just got back home, sweet 4th of Juliet, I survived all the traffic on both sides of the border.

I am adding to my old post because I'll be going back to Ottawa for 150th birthday of Canada (Canada Day 2017). Since the new Canadian War Museum is only about a kilometre away from the party (in front of Canadian Parliament), I'll take a walk and take more detailed picture of torpedo whiskers for Dronic69. If anyone has any particular interests and wants me to take more pics, I'll be glad to oblige.

Sorry for no pictures sksvlad, I havent been back to the War Museum in a little over a year. I have seen some updates and it looks like their restoration team has been working hard the last year or so and many new pieces have been added to the large display hall
. If you are alsk interested, not far from Parliament at the Town Hall there is a small little Universal Carrier sitting out front.

Thank you Vlad - very much appreciated!

It is the first actual photo I have seen of a Whitehead's Integrated Fan /Whisker Pistol Type (1902) (p.31 in my book), typically used on 18" torpedoes of the period.

This seems to be a slight variation from the illustrated Whitehead one as it may have been produced by the Royal Gun Factory (RGF), and not Fiume nor Weymouth.

Also "ties" in with the HMS Niobe (before been handled out to the Canadian Navy in ~1910), which commence service in 1897.

Great Stuff!

Cheers
Drew
