USS Slater, Albany, New York

That looks like a very well armed museum ship. Great to see guns on the mounts and ammo in the racks.

I have one question. There are a number of 20mm Oerlikon gun tubs on the ship, and there are 5 or 6 inch diameter pipes mounted at an angle on the sides of the tubs. What is their function?

These are hollow tubes. They were filled with fresh water and the overheated gun barrels were placed inside to cool down. The sailors were supposed to use asbestos gloves to change the barrels, but I did not see asbestos gloves around:captain:

I happened to be near USS Slater during winterization, so my daughters and I had a private tour of the insides (engine room etc). A lot of work by many volunteers. Note a single U shaped tube at the end of the stern, it is a fogger, this ship would run around the convoy and wrap it in dense fog so the enemy couldn't target individual vessels. 2 diesel V16 engines to power the electric generator which in turn powered 2 propellers. It is easier to use electrically driven propellers, both for varying speed and reversing direction. The giant cylindrical metallic object is a piston, the smaller ones around it are from lorries and cars, for comparison. If you think you see white asbestos wrapped in linen everywhere, you are right, the entire ship was insulated with asbestos. The crew are trying to remove it, takes a lot of time. The 2 identical objects in the radio room are Morse code keys (everything on the ship is doubled, in case one breaks). The steering wheel looking thing next to rudder control arms is a STEERING WHEEL, manual way to steer rudders if everything else fails.
