Cutaway model of a 15cm Granate 19 Beton -15cm-Gr.19Be- (concrete-piercing). This projectile is meant to be used against concrete targets and fortifications.
The projectile’s body is a tough (not hardened) steel body with a thickened nose for piercing purposes, threaded in the base to receive the Bd.Z. f. 15cm Gr.19 Be (base fuze for 15cm concrete piercing projectile 19). A steel cap is screwed into the base of the projectile, on its turn housing the Bodenlochbuchse f. 15cm Gr.Be (base hole bushing for 15cm concrete piercing shell), which houses the fuze. A ballistic cap is welded to the nose of the projectile.

The explosive charge exists of a thick cartboard bushing with four pressed blocks of explosives. The upper three are pressed blocks G-salz (a cheap replacement explosive), the lower one is H-10 (Hexogen with 10% wax).
Weight of the complete charge: 3,54 kg of which 3,375 kg of explosives.
A dome shaped bakelite cap is glued to the top of the charge. This cap prevents the heat of the impact of setting off the main charge.

Functioning of the fuze:
The fuze has a ring of centrifugal weights, keeping apart the firing pin from the firing cap. The weights are kept inward by a foil coil spring. After firing these weights swing outward , enabeling the firing cap housing to move forward into the firing pin. The fuze can be set in three delay modes by twisting the screw in the base 120 degrees. By turning this screw , the channel (green) is turned below one of three holes (red) in an aluminium disc containing a hole, a lightly pressed black powder (short delay) fuze and a hard pressed (long delay) black powder fuze. This enables the projectile to explode on impact, either to explode after piercing the target.
Above the fuze a booster charge C98 NP is placed.

The weight of the complete projectile is 43,50 kg
Length of the projectile : 591 mm

For the best effect the projectile is to be fired with the maximum number of charges (charges 1 to 8) and has a maximum range of 13.325 mtrs and a Vo. of 520 mtrs/sec.

The projectile was fired from the Schwere feldhaubitze 18 (Heavy howitzer 18).
