Cutaway models of the Dutch handgrenades Nr.1 and Nr.1C1.
These handgrenades are the first post WW2 Dutch handgrenades of Dutch design and manufacture. They resemble the US pineapple granade in shape and size, but have a smooth cast iron body.
The grenade Nr.1 uses the French Mle 1935 fuze which was named the “ontsteker No.12 (Fuze No.12) in the Netherlands. This fuze uses a double spring loaded firing pin (red) that does not rotate fully around –like the US moustrap fuze- , but is kept in lower position by a spring loaded brass pin that is fixated by the safety lever. As soon as the lever is released, the brass pin is pulled back by it’s spring, releasing the double firing pin to rotate into the two open firing caps in the top plate of the fuze. This double firing pin /cap assembly enshures a lower chance of duds.
The fuze is placed in a bakelite bushing , that forms a division between the explosive charge and the fuze. When stored without fuze, a transport cap is screwed on the bakelite bushing.
The handgrenade Nr.1C1 is the improved version of the handgrenade Nr.1 , using the US design -and dutch modified- mouse trap fuze Nr.19C1/20. The bakelite bushing has been removed and has been replaced by a brass intermediate ring.
Both handgrenades were produced by the AI (Artillerie Inrichtingen) in Zaandam.
Both handgrenades have a fuze burning time of 4 to 5 seconds.
Both handgrenades are obsolete and were replaced by the grenade Nr.20 which is also obsolete by now.
