A friend of mine was on Challenger in Op Telic and they were told to avoid knocked out Iraqi armour because of the dangers of ingesting du particles. Apparently, it was not unknown to see US troops climbing on them and taking group pictures.
I once read on somehwere on the internet that American troops during the '91 Gulf war had been known to wear pieces of fired DU attached to their dog tag chains.
I have no idea whether this story is true or not. It does sound like internet folklore.
Does anyone know if there is any truth in it?

ANY LIVE OR DUD ORDNANCE POSTED BY ME HAS BEEN DISPOSED OF BY EOD PERSONNEL
Have dealt with DU for many years.
Don't scratch yourself with it.
Don't put it in your front pocket if you ain't had kids yet.
And a simple test if its DU or Tungsten is it is seriously pyrophoric!
Scratch it on a chunk of steel if it throws off sparks its DU.
Not recommending this as its patently unhealthy, but working with ordnance isn't exactly the healthiest occupation.

PGU-14A/B round DU penetrator found South-east from Sarajevo last month. Most probably fired on 5th Oct 1994. Disposal of this kind of ammo requires disposal of the surrounding dirt too... and IMAS L3+ expertise. After we picked up this piece we found out that it was undamaged but lost 60 grams of mass due to oxidation process.

Found this which may be of interest, looks like 30mm cannon had this stuff.

Recently went through a collection identifying and removing hazardous and/or illegal materials at the owner's request. As mentioned much earlier by Tony, DU is not generally hazardous unless the material is exposed and allowed to oxidize. Once it does the dust has potential to become a serious issue.
