Here is one most will not know or have ever actually seen one. Except US Subs and he can't jump in. I know what it is just thought I'd throw it in for some to do a little research on to ID.16864656_10209953529814011_5707143293720004221_n.jpg16996144_10209953529854012_9021214623615159455_n.jpg16998026_10209953530654032_2148471981094310054_n.jpg16998042_10209953531054042_9169130679126039513_n.jpg17022051_10209953530574030_3172021359097203114_n.jpg17022168_10209953530294023_6560459766696394121_n.jpg17022515_10209953530254022_3778093559231435760_n.jpg

I'm going to take a wild guess here, because I've never seen one, but it is similar to the "drop shape" for the old B43 weapon, in apparently a "post deployment" condition.

How about US mk 80 series chemical spray tank.

No idea of the correct designation.

Could this be used for gathering samples of gas/dust/debris clouds in hostile areas, just guessing,!

Don,

Let's try to analyze the "Thing" - we have from front to rear:
1) a balistic cone (photo 5)
2) a body with inside some kind of container (we can see the bottom of this container and rear pipe opening on photo 6)
3) some kind of apparatus connected to this rear pipe (photo 2) with some kind of small electrical motor between "inlet" pipe and "outet" pipe - this last leading to an exhaust pipe (photo 3)
4) a conical tail (photo 4)

so we can be in front of:
1) a sprayer - chemical agent sprayer (not only for chemical warfare but also silver nitrate for "cloud seeding")
2) a smoke screen dispenser (something like the "flying cow")
2) an inflight refuel system (not really fitting the dimensions of this object)
3) a colored smoke marker (like the ww2 smoke skymarkers)
4) something I have not the least idea of
BTW Superficially it strangely reminds of the recce pod improvised by the Rhodesians on the basis of a Hunter drop fuel tank - just end-front - but a closer looks cancels the possibility that this is a recce "tank".
So...where does this lead us?

Perhaps a "Longitudinal Accelerometer", which was dropped free fall and used for transonic drag investigations????

The first ones were dropped from a B-29 Super Fortress or a double wing Mustang.

Cheers
Drew

Can anyone advise as to the following -

The significance of the two (wide) semi circumferential yellow bands.

The Flow Indicator appears to be manufactured by "GOAN" The 'O' could be 'D' and the 'A' could be a 'R' I can find no trace of any of the permutations - Is this company familiar to anyone?

Smoke discharger (carried by and not dropped from aircraft for study of vortices and airflow around external carried ordnance),that's an even wilder guess than my last effort,
Don,

Hey Mike, been off-line for all week due to work, send me an e-mail and let me know where the pix came from. Its been years since I've seen one of these, and of course they quit teaching them around 1980. There were a few left over in CO for a while, but even most of those were destroyed in 97-98. I don't know of any left in museums, but its big cousin is on display at Eglin.

This is a US AB 45Y,biological agent spray tank. Designed for dry agents but was also0 modified for liquid agents too. I have a pretty good digital folder on this and other bio weapons

Am I right in assuming this was the 'sprayer' used in Operation Ranch Hand?

TimG

I think that was the AA45Y....internal rather than external carry..

not sure why this didn't reply to timg rather than snufkin....operator error on my part?
