AF broad arrow

hi
does any body know who A broadarrow F is on a small spanner,never seen this one before and couldnt find anything

The AF on a spanner is quite common, known as 'across the flats' of a bolt in measurement ie flat side of bolt to the other flat slide. So a spanner marked 1/2 inch AF would fit a bolt or nut that size flat side to flat side, not the size of thread or corner to corner of the nut or bolt, same applies to a spanner in mms. The broad arrow marked inbetween is nothing unusual.

It would appear to mean Air Force, as in Royal Australian Air Force, and dates from the 1950's.

There is a thread about 'A broad arrow F' marked FTR rifles on Gunboards, link below. There are also FTR Thompson SMGs, and FTR S&W .38-200 revolvers with A /I\ F markings, and RAAF clothing was marked with A /I\ F.

The best post to read on the Gunboards thread is probably number 30, which has well reasoned arguments to say why it means air force.
