I’ve just got this empty H83 Mk2 box from a friend.
The 11/86 date suggests it had held L5A4 Medium Range baton rounds, but there is no trace of an L number on the box.

The NSN on the end of the package is for Round 1.5" Anti-riot Baton L5A4 MR.
It was declared obsolete somewhere around 2000 or before.

L5A4 baton round tin, dating from 1986. Does anyone know which loading station or manufacturer AP indicates?

There is a later label stuck on one end of the tin that says ‘38 BATON BLANK’, I suspect this means the box was repurposed to carry or store some 37mm L38A1 blanks.

Lovely Riot Control boxes etc. Never see these in Australia. We are seldom using these items except at Bathurst prison riot years ago when I got some nice items.
That O gauge case was proven to be a fake on the IAA forum years ago. I even bought one of these for interest as a real item.

just came across this photo, never seen before... Derry, around 1996, apparently. look at all those batons (L5A5 or -A6 maybe?)/boxes/holders!

Great picture Marc.
If 1996, the batons should be L5A5. The L5A6 was introduced from July 1997.
Notice that the soldier has an L104A1 baton gun, introduced around 1993/4.

Some history on the vehicle in the background.

Where’d you get the data on the vehicle? If it ended up at Witham it must be in private ownership now? Note that the backdrop in photo is the Saxon’s extending riot screens deployed (the screens fitted to the older Humber Pig gave that version of the vehicle the nickname ‘Flying Pig’).
