Hi All,

Shown in the photo is what I think is an AP proj for the Sherman Tank. Now I always thought that we used American ammo for the Shermans we had, but this quite clearly has the British style of marking.

The stampings on the body are:-
SAP
75MM
4 T
N I
LOT 76
4 / 42

Can anyone tell me who made this, please?

Thanks,
Roger.

Bear in mind that the Sherman was not the only tank with the 75mm gun in British Service. Cromwell and Churchill lasted in service for a surprisingly long time.

Newman Industries Ltd (Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of Bristol). Their first contract, this one for 200,000, subsequently increased to 432K. Order placed 24th March 1941. Unit price 8/2 (41p).

Newmans also manufactured 75mm HE.

Of note is that Vickers Armstrong had a contract for breaking down 12,000 US HE rounds and converting them to SAP. However, the contract was subsequently cancelled.
