Cylinder (tin/can) No.720 Mk.1 stencilled for use with 7 cartridges 1.5" Anti-Riot Irritant L2A2, manufactured by Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus in 1961.

Notice that the lid has a small sliding catch which engages under the rim of the container to cut the foil seal. See hangarman's post below for explanation.

This empty container and two others were found in South Africa, so the cartridges may have been used there.

Hi Reccetrooper,

Nice tin, I also have one with its lid missing, so if you come across a spare lid.....
I never knew that SPRA stood for Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus, so thanks for that .
The little sliding catch was used to cut through the foil seal on the top of the container. It was stored on the outer edge of the lid and then to open the tin, slid to its inner position, the lid was then put onto the tin and the pointed bid pushed through the foil and the lid rotated to remove the seal. there should be remains of the foil seal still soldered to the tin.
Cheers
Gary

Also used with paper cased 1.5" flares. Very nice tin,and pretty damn scarce to boot! Tig
