This grenade emits green smoke as a signal, wind direction indicator, target marker or marker for light aircraft and helikopters landing place.
The grenade consists ot two main parts ; an extruded sheet aluminium grenade body, on which fuze RD 1259/3 or RD 1512 is placed.
The grenade body consits of an aluminium can to which a bottom is swaged. On the inside of the body two cilinders of smoke composition are placed in a cartboard cilinder. In the hole of the smoke composition cilinder a strip of impregnated foam is placed , used to ignite the smoke composition. A spring is placed in the middle of the foam to keep it pressed against the pyrotchenic delay of the fuze. At the base of the smoke composition a set of cartboard rings and discs with holes is placed to allow the smoke to mix with air before leaving the hole in the bottom.
The fuze is of the mouse trap type, however is designed in such a way that the lever does not fly off. This is done for safety to prevent the lever from flying through the cockpit of a plane or helikopter when thrown from the cockpit.
The safety pin has to be rotated 90 degrees before it can be retracted.
The flame of the firing cap ignites the pyrotechnic delay pellet which ignites the impregnated foam around the spring.
