Cutaway model of a Rheinmetal produced Stun grenade using sound and flash. The grenade does not use lethal fragmentation or blast, but disables criminals or terrorists for a few seconds, just enough for police/special forces to attack. Stun grenades are mostly used in situations where hostages are present and deadly force cannot be used indiscriminately.
The grenade body is made of aluminium and has two chambers drilled, connected by a small hole.
Both chambers are filled with a type of powder that produces a very bright flash and high noise.
Themousetrap type handgrenade fuze is screwed on top and has a short 1,5 seconds delay, to prevent the grenade from being thrown back or kicked away.
This grenade has only one bang, but by placing a brass pipe with a pyrotechnic delay in the small hole between the two charges the grenade can be made two bangs.
A screw is placed in the base of the grenade body, which enables several add on pieces to be screwed to the base, like a tear gas element, a smoke element, an irritant dust element, or a hardened metal spike element that allows the grenade to penetrate a window.
